It’s no secret that many states across the country have began opening up beyond “essential businesses”. Being out and about in public spaces amid the coronavirus probably makes you uneasy – and it should as this is only the beginning. I thought I’d share some of the ways my family and I are staying safe in public places during this uncertain period. Whether you’re out running essential errands or just need to get the family out, it’s always best to err on the side of caution. Keep scrolling for my tips!

Wearing a mask is not at all comfortable – I get it, but if it considerably reduces the amount of virus escaping via speaking, breathing, and coughing, then it’s worth wearing. There are plenty of basic cloth masks and beautifully designed styles available, but I would encourage you to opt for styles that abide by CDC guidelines like these. With multiple fabric layers, a filter pocket, and soft cotton liner, you’re not only protected, but can stay comfortable. Sizes are available for adults and kids.

2. Wipe down your cart when shopping

Our local grocery stores are offering complimentary wipes and sanitizing stations. However, I also like to bring my own to wipe down the cart before I start shopping. It’s also a good idea to go in with a specific list so you’re not wandering around touching everything – and instead only grab what’s absolutely necessary.

3. Always have hand sanitizer or sanitizing wipes on hand

Having hand sanitizers with you at all times should already be a given, but they have been hard to find lately. This set of 6 is currently in stock and contains 65% alcohol. They’re great for in between trips – and for the kids too!

4. Continue to support restaurants with takeout & shop online

Even though some dining rooms have already reopened, we’ll be sticking to takeout for a while. Same with shopping – we’ll be doing it online for much longer. Remember that just because your local area might be in a reopening phase, it’s no indication that the ongoing risks of the coronavirus are gone. If you choose to go out, please take precautions and continue to stay 6 ft apart from others.

5. Meet friends & family in outdoor settings

The fact that summer is on the horizon is good new for everyone as experts advise it’s much safer to socialize outdoors. Whether you’re in the backyard or on your front lawn, you’re at a lower risk for the virus with better ventilation and more direct sunlight. Bring your own picnic blanket and opt for foods that can be served individually vs shared!

6. Tread carefully with personal care services

Hair salons and nail salons are another tricky area we’ll be avoiding for a while. Instead, I’ll be sticking to my nail cure and gel polish. As much as I love getting pampered, it’s still quite early on the process – but I would say go with what feels right for you. If you trust your nail tech and the safety measures they have in place, then it might be an appropriate situation.

Any other ways you guys are staying safe in public places as things start to open back up? I’d love to hear all about it!
