Working from home is no easy feat especially if you have little ones – so huge shout out to all the working moms – and welcome to the dark side! I’m lucky enough to have a job that allows me to work from anywhere, and seeing how this isn’t going to be ending anytime soon for many of you, I wanted to share some tips to make the most of it. I feel it’s probably most necessary to talk about ways you can unwind after a long day since the line is so fine between work and home life now. If it’s been a struggle, then read ahead – this one’s for you!

1. Set an end time and abide by it

I’ve been known to be a workaholic, and I’m sure many of you are guilty of it too. The struggle with working from home is that there never seems to be a cutoff time – 5 pm is no different than 10 pm! This becomes problematic when there’s no balance – and you’re working all the time. Anxiety will eventually kick in, the kids get out of control, and you’ll feel constantly stressed. Resolve this by setting an end time – and following it. Start wrapping up your work an hour prior then leave the desk, turn off your social media notifications, or whatever else it takes.

2. Get outside with the family

I have no shame admitting that getting outside is sometimes a way for me to unwind after a long day. The kids run around freely in the backyard without bothering me – and I actually get to relax with a glass of wine or cocktail and fruits. I’m so grateful the days are getting longer! If you haven’t had a meal outside yet, I highly recommend doing so even if it’s on the balcony or at a nearby park.

3. Set aside 30 minutes for some physical activity

Working out just isn’t my jam, but I can’t deny that there’s not a huge difference in your mood once you get the blood flowing. I find mornings are best for that burst of energy, but it doesn’t really matter. Riding bikes with the kids at the end of the day always does the job for me. I also enjoy these workouts on YouTube when I have some alone time: 1, 2, 3.

Human contact is probably the thing we all miss most – especially with other adults outside the family. So, round up your friends, family, or co-workers for a quick 1-hour session in the evening and catch up on shows, movies, or whine about life at home. Want something a little more fast-paced and entertaining? Have a game night instead!

5. Have an evening routine

An evening routine is probably my favorite part of the day. The kids are usually in bed – or too tired to do anything else. I love ending the day with a long soak in the bathtub, glass of wine by my side, and a good book. I usually finish it all off with a good skincare ritual – basically the whole 9 yards – including a scalp scrub, body scrub, multi-masking, and loading up on moisturizers. I can’t stress enough how relaxing this is for the body, mind, and soul!

Sometimes when the energy in the home starts to feel too overwhelming, I’ll even do a quick palo santo home cleansing ritual. If anything, it leaves a sweet aromatic scent that lingers around the home and makes me feel more calm. I love playing mood-boosting music and even lighting up a candle afterwards.
