First impressions are absolutely everything, especially when going in for the first round of a job interview. I am sure several of you are freshly graduated from college and about to enter the hustle and bustle of the workforce. Of course, interviews can be extremely intimidating and nerve wracking! I remember I would spend hours the day before preparing notes and practicing potential questions. However, one thing you can do to ease the stress is to go into the interview looking polished and professional. Clothing has a direct impact on your consciousness and your confidence, so if you dress the part, you are already well on your way to success. Today, I wanted to cover the do’s and don’ts of interview outfit etiquette and how you can dress to give yourself an edge over the competition.

Blazer

Even if you know the company in which you are interviewing for is relatively casual and relaxed in culture, I think it is always better to go overdressed

than underdressed. When you don’t know what to wear to an interview, I always find that a blazer is a foolproof option. For both men and women, the blazer is almost symbolic in nature of representing professionalism and sophistication all in one. No matter what, a blazer looks good paired with trousers, a skirt, or a dress. Unless you are going after a job in the creative industry, I recommend sticking to neutral solid colors or simple patterns (like plaid) so it’s not too overwhelming.

Simple Shoes

The shoes you decide to wear are just as important as the outfit. Obviously, you will want to stray away from anything too flashy or loud. Instead, stick to shoes that are on the more modest side and are cohesive with your outfit. For instance, I would keep clear of your tall stilettos that you might wear for

a night out, but not necessarily for a day in the office. Kitten heels, flats, loafers, and chunky heels are all great options that help you to put your best foot forward (get it)!?

Button Up

Just as the blazer is a no brainer outerwear choice, so is the button up shirt. This unassuming classic creates a very clean, approachable aesthetic. You can choose to tuck the top into some simple, straight-cut

trousers or a pencil skirt. After all, the most important thing to a successful interview outfit is for it to not be too distracting. You are there to have the interviewer focus on you and your many qualifications, not how trendy your outfit is!

Minimal Tote

It is definitely okay to add some accessories into your interview outfit. Again, you should stick to things like minimal jewelry, a timeless watch, and a simple tote or shoulder bag. This is not the place to flex your newest Gucci logo handbag! Instead, choose something simple and effective. It should be big enough to fit your resume portfolio, but not as big as a backpack.

Lastly, no interview outfit is complete without giving your nails some love! As your outfit should be nothing but clean and professional, so should your nails. You will certainly come across instances in which you shake your interviewer’s hand, point something out on your resume, or gesture with your hands. Whatever it may be, the last thing you want is neon pink nail polish flashing in front of the interviewer’s eyes. Stick to something neutral or pink to complete your interview look!

Above all, the most important thing you should bring with you to your interview is confidence. Go in with an open mind and a willingness to put yourself out there. No matter what the outcome, an interview is a great experience and something you get better at with each try. Best of luck!
